Another Cold War? U.S. deploys missile shield to the Persian Gulf

President Obama is placing land-based missile defense shields in Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, and Bahrain.  Also, two Navy missile defense ships in the Mediterranean.  Government officials have said that it is meant to deter any attack coming from Iran, but it could dramatically increase tensions in the Middle East.

Our first goal is to deter the Iranians. A second is to reassure the Arab states, so they don’t feel they have to go nuclear themselves.  But there is certainly an element of calming the Israelis as well.

While these intentions are well-meant, I fear that this sort of escalation is something that we saw during the Cold War where the Soviet Union did something, then we did.  Ultimately it brought about the Cuban Missile crisis.  Which the Soviet Union thought, well, the United States can do this, so can we.
