Yemen Government: U.S. intervention could strengthen al-Qaeda

Yemen’s deputy prime minister for security and defense, Rashad al-Alimi, had this to say:

If there is direct intervention by the United States, it will strengthen al-Qaeda.  We cannot accept any foreign troops on Yemeni territory.

This is another example of how U.S. intervention can bolster instability and chaos.  The Yemeni government is weak enough and a U.S. invasion and occupation would only bring legitamacy and popularity to al-Qaeda.  After all the Detroit-bound aircraft attack attempt was in response to two U.S. operations in Yemen.

While there is no easy answer to something like this; we are fooling ourselves if we think that we can lead an operation inside Yemen and expect order to restore itself.
